I hear him stirring and predict his every move; meet him halfway up the stairs, his nascent conscious form melting into the softness of the belly that grew him, and we wordlessly move as one organism towards my room, into my bed, across the limbs of two of his siblings, where I lay stone still until the rose of his mouth parts slightly and the tendrils of his breath unfurl in steady rhythm; and when I do slip out, it is to pause on the other side of the door, listening, because my other children fall back asleep easily but this one,
As a grandmother I remember this glorious God-given revelation through two generations. It is so good to be the knower, the protector of the tender, forming parts of the gifts we’re given. It is good to be woman.
This is beautiful, Shannon, thank you for writing and sharing it. My relationship with my children—loving them, forgiving them, enjoying them, being their "knower"—has always helped me understand how God loves me. Oh, how He knows me. What a relief that is.
Oh goodness, Shannon. I should have known better than to read this right now. 😭 I’m on my way to drop my boy off for his 2nd year in college. His squawks have become fewer and farther between, but they still come and I still answer. What a privilege. 💙💙💙
This is beautiful, and absolutely love the end of what it is to be the knower. We often want to feel valued, loved and known; but to be the knower is so extremely special too!

Stunning. Particularly swooning over this line: "...certain I will come flying, certain he will feel the weight of my wing."

Absolutely love! The words of to be the knower, such a special reminder of the gift we get in that.
